Passport processing speeds vary from 6 weeks or longer but can also be as fast as 24 hours. It depends on the passport type you need, where you are located, and also your budget. We will explore all of the ways to get a passport so you can better understand how long it takes to get a U.S. passport.

How long does it take to get a U.S. passport?

Routine passport processing is 4-6 weeks through your local post office or county clerk. Unfortunately the processing times are not guaranteed. If there are any issues with your documents or you are not eligible for a passport, the process will take much longer. We often recommend travelers to apply for their passports as early as possible.

Fast passport processing starts at 3 week turnaround. This is often called expedited service through the post office. According to the Department of State website, expedited rush passport processing through the post office ranges from 2-3 weeks. Again, these processing times are not guaranteed as any issues with your application will cause delays. Additional fees will apply for expedited applications. The U.S. Department of State charges an additional $60 for all expedited passport applications.

An ever faster processing option is available. Our service can secure a passport as fast as 24 hours. Our processing times are based on when we get the documents from you. As a registered passport courier service, we can secure your passport as fast as 24 hours. Our fast passport expedited processing times range from 8-14 days for $149 and go all the way up to 24 hour for $349. Our fees are paid online, and the government fees are paid separately in the form of a check when you send us the rest of the required documents. If you plan to use our service, you will need to follow our Instructional Checklists.

Finally, if you live near a major city with a Regional Passport Agency and you have confirmed travel plans within 5 days, you may be able to schedule an appointment. Expedited fees still apply.

The processing time for a passport can range from same day processing to 6 weeks or longer. Make sure that you know your options. No matter when you are planning to travel, it's always important to have a valid passport. If you are traveling soon and need rush passport service, we can help. For over 12 years we've processed expedited U.S. passports, and every year we help thousands of U.S. citizens get their passports fast.
